Contradancing
Rachel and I both love to dance. We first got to know each other dancing together at the Revels closing party back in 2003. I've done a fair amount of contradancing over the years, and a little bit of ballroom dancing, but in truth, I'm kind of an eternal beginner: I dance just often enough to not trip over my feet when I'm out on the floor, but not enough to get the grace and coordination of someone like my friend John Bartak, who dances ballroom competitively.
Since we have master fiddler Shira Kammen doing music for our wedding, we thought it'd be fun to have contradancing at our reception. (Don't worry -- beverages to relax the process will be served beforehand.) I imagine that some of you may need some instruction before you try it in person, so as a public service, here are some things that may help:
1) Shira is playing fiddle at two upcoming English country dances, on Saturday, December 23, and Wednesday, December 27, both at Grace North Church in Berkeley, starting at 7:30 pm. The dance on the 23rd is intended for more experienced dancers; but according to Shira, if you've ever danced in a Revels show, or done something similar, you'll be fine.
2) In case you needed more proof that everything is available on the web, here is a Flash video instructional guide to English country dancing moves. The music and text are like something out of Jane Austen. It's way cute.
3) The Bay Area Contra Dance Society sponsors many, many events all over the Bay Area where you can get a dancing fix. Many a relationship I know has begun over dancing, including Hilary and Stephen.
